The key word here is "Chains" -- the issue with fastening to the suspension
is not wear on the suspension, but rather stretching the cloth straps. If
you used chains, no problems.

Two other notes -- to cross or not to cross straps. I've always been told
to cross them to keep the car from moving sideways, but Michael's point about
what happens if one lets loose sounds really sensible.

Also, I've also been told to put the car in neutral, so that back and forth
movement of the car wouldn't cause transmission wear, but recently, others
have said to put it in gear, for the same reason one puts the car in gear on
a hill -- to keep it from moving back or forth.
