I have in my mind Rich Chrysler told me these plates were attached at Jensens
and so painted with the chassis.
Just as I am getting old I want to have it confirmed.
Hope Rich can bring some light on it.

Not so, at least on Hundreds and I don't know why later Healeys would be
different. The plates are black.

Consider: The steering column is black. It was fitted after the chassis was
painted. The plates were attached after the steering column was installed.
The basic principle that Rich Chrysler has offered is that everything that was
not on the chassis as delivered to the factory for assembly was black (except
for the engine, which has its own color and some of the transmissions which
were either not painted or were engine color. )
