John,
Here is the info I got from my friend who just went through this with a
Mk. II BT7 grille with vertical slats:

I tried polishing mine and I got no where. I talked to M and Z
Anodizing in Dallastown (PA) and he told me you have to strip it first. So I
left it there and they stripped it. That made it so much easier to
polish. I used a 220 on the fine stone chips and then a 400 and then a
600 on entire slats. Then I buffed with red scotchbrite. I got a little
more of a satin finish than the original finish. The anodizer said that
if they were buffed to a higher degree, the finish would be that way also.
They used a silver clear type finish on mine. If the
grill is in great shape I believe he could just use a clear on it. I
didn't take mine apart other than replacing a couple of dented slats
with some off a grill I got at Carlisle.
I saw some guys said they were chrome plated slats. My anodizer said
they weren't, he said they are anodized. Maybe some Healeys were chrome
I am happy with my finish, maybe concours won't be? I didn't spend $400 and
send it to CA
like some guys either. Del said LiBrandi's told him $1,400 to chrome it
