Back in the early 70's a friend of mine took the key out of his Triumph 
motorcycle, put it in my ignition and was able to start my '59 100-6 Healey! 
After that I always used my shut-off switch.

I am not sure how it is with AH's but on most/many UK cars there were (at 
least) two keys, one for the ignition and the other one for the door and 
boot locks. 
Meaning that the numbers on the boot lock do not have to be the same as on 
the ignition lock. 
It is the way it was on my Triumph Spitfire MkIII, (2 keys), Landrover SIII 
(3 keys) and Jensen Healeys (2keys).
