Folks,

I have 83 years of stuff to remember so I mislead you on the title. I
remembered there was an article in the Toronto MG clubs newsletter in May
2003 reprinted from *Enjoying MG,* January 2003, that cited the book as a
source. A word about that later.

AT the End of the Road: the rise and fall of Austin-Healey, MG and Triumph,
by Timothy R. Whisler.

The article was called *Killed by a Lie*. It concerned the reason for
shutting down the Abingdon factory and killing the MG in favor of the
Triumph.

When BMC and Leyand combine, the Leyland management became the managers.
Lord Stokes wanted information about which line, MG or Triumph was the best
seller in the US. He sent several of his assistants to the US to research
the numbers. They came back and said Triumph was the most popular car and
outsold the MGs.

Portions of the appendix of Whisler's book deal with the number of cars
manufactured. It's a no-brainer. Records show MG outsold Triumph by a good
margin, but the loyal Triumph managers came back and lied. This, of course,
led to canceling the MG,  and the production of a number of
disastrous Triumphs.

BTW, Whisler mentions that while Longbridge produced more cars (he called
if "Fordism"}, the Abingdon method of manufacturing by teams doing their
job, the rolling the car to the next team, created a higher quality of
product. Geof Healey reinforces this statement when he said in his book
that e was concerned, about transferring the manufacturing of Healeys from
Longbridge to Abingdon. He came to applaud the decision because of the
better quality of work
