Hi Simon,
I would opt for rebuilding your original any day unless the vendor of the
replacement damper can provide evidence that the device that they are
flogging has been designed SPECIFICALLY for the engine type to which you
are fitting it.
I spent lot of time researching crankshaft dampers whilst studying the
causes 100 crankshaft failures and during that research I learned that
unless the damper is designed with a natural frequency of 0.8 - 0.9 of that
of the crankshaft it will probably be of no use at all.
Although many people will tell you otherwise the engineers at B.M.C. knew
what they were doing and you can be assured that a lot of effort went into
designing the dampers used on the 6 cylinder engine and they were not
fitted just to look pretty.
