Agreed. Absolutely. I=E2=80=99ve a 3:54 in my diff & a 28% OD. Does =
improve comfort of cruising=E2=80=A6sometimes one has to go a long =
way/time on an autoroute/motorway/autobahn etc.

Hi Wayne, I have a 3.55/ 1 ratoi in the spiral bevel differential of my =
early BN1. Mine is from an Austin Atlantic convertible, the fixed head =
used a different ratio.

This was an available option for the BN1 and was supplied with a 140MPH =
speedometer.=20

With the 28% overdrive it is an ideal combination for modern roads =
providing 70 MPH cruising at under 3000 RPM.

I believe that Dennis Welsh have the crownwhell an pinion set available =
for the 3.55/1 ratio.

It is a relatively easy installation if you are familiar with =
differential assembly.

Hi Wayne,

=20

First what do you mean by "early BN1?" If it's the Spiral Bevel rear =
end, then the standard 3.54 rear end conversion will not work. These =
will only work on the later BN1s with the Hypoid Bevel rear end starting =
at chassis no. 221536 in Nov. '54.

=20

That being said, maybe there is a lower gear option for the Spiral Bevel =
unit, but if there is, I'm not aware of who might supply it.

=20

BTW, my shop here in San Diego installed my Lempert 3.54 rear-end, and =
of course rebuilt the whole unit while they had the thing apart. =
Fortunately, the shop had done a number of Healey conversions and was =
very familiar with the process. BTW, I have one of the very early BN1 =
Hypoid rear end units with the filler plug on the carrier versus on the =
top of the pumpkin as on the later cars, but there was no problem.

=20

Anyone interested, I have an spare original 3.54 rear end that I picked =
up 20 years ago in Australia from my friend Rob Rowland at the Healey =
Factory. If interested, send me an email.

=20

Cheers,

=20

Does anyone have the specifications for installing a 3:5 or so gear set =
into an early BN-1 100-4 differential? I am looking for pinion preload =
and ring gear lash etc.My friend with his 100-4 spends a lot of time on =
the highway and would like to lower his rpm's at highway speeds. Denis =
Welch has the gearset needed, just would need specs, available of shims, =
bearings etc. I have done several conversions on Healey 3000's but the =
BN-1 third member is a different animal

=20

                                    Thanks
