I've left mine the way they were. But then mine wern't badly grooved.
I'd say if you are uncomfortable about the way they look, weld them up.
Certainlt if they are open to the inside, weld them. If they are less than
1/4 of the way through, it's your call.

I have just stripped the rear end off the frame of my 1950 MGTD. I have
very little history on this car other than the car last saw the road in
approx 1976 when its owner died and it was sitting in storage until I
purchased it last year. I have determined that it was in a fairly bad
accident in approx 1951 or early 52 and was repaired but the frame was
not straightened even though it was BENT. I have had the frame repaired
properly, replaced all of the broken and cracked suspension pieces and
rebuilt the tub. Once the frame was stripped and repainted I started
working on the bits and pieces that attach to the frame, including the
rear end. Now that it is stripped I find that the U bolts have worked
themselves into the casing and worn grooves.
My question is...I have purchased the plates that go around the axle but
should I MIG weld the grooves and grind them down or can they be left.
