The original wasn't replaceable. The common solution, assuming you don't
want to bin your original housing and purchase a ready made conversion
housing, is to knock out the bar, and machine a seating to suit a modern
thermostat. There is just enough metal to do this, and cut a shallow
internal groove to fit a wire clip to hold the thermostat in place. The
original had a sleeve that sealed of the bypass as the 'stat opened.
Providing the bypass hole has not been enlarged this is not necessary. 
I can't remember the exact 'stat I used, but a look through the
catalogues should reveal one of suitable diameter. Temp rating depends
on your climate, but remember the rad is not sealed so it will boil at
100 deg C unlike a TF.
