Increasing noise.

A couple of months ago I wrote about engine tapping and its source. At idle
it's a tapping noise at a frequency of three or four times a second,
increasing with engine speed.

I now have about 17,000 miles on my rebuilt engine and the noise wasn't there
at first. After posting the last time I took suggestions to remove the fan
belt to isolate the water pump (no change) and use a piece of tubing as a
psuedo stethescope to isolate the cylinder (couldn't locate it.)

We just completed a 500 mile trip to and from Yosemite from the Bay Area and
volume of the noise has definitely increased .. The car ran fine, even at high
altitude and seemed to maintain its hill climbing power.

Early in the trip I began to hear valve rattle when the engine is under load.
At first it was just accelerating up hills, but now it's for virtually all
acceleration. This isn't being transmitted through the shift lever but is
audible under the hood.

I'm concerned that these two noises are related and that there may be a major
engine failure out there somewhere.

Are these noises related?

What do I need to do to find the source?

Any theories as to cause?
