Ron,
I don't know how you are going about flashing the field windings, but
the following method is what I have used for many years to good affect.
Remove the wire from the field terminal of the generator and using a
piece of wire that will reach from the battery's negative terminal to
the field terminal, wipe it across the field terminal sufficiently to
cause sparking. I normally do this a couple of times, then reassemble
everything. By going directly fromt eh battery to the field terminal of
the generator, it will eliminate any chance that there is a sneak path
to disrupt the proceedure.
