Smack on one end of a dense object like a steel girder or a railroad track,
and you'll hear it VERY far away. Put a break of density between smack site
and ear site (like an air gap) and you'll break the transmission of the
vibrating. I believe foam acts similarly, thus the terrific souond proofing
of foam earplugs.
