I have also experienced the "flickering" alternator light on my 71 MGB.
My problem was related to the "hot" lead at the starter. The wire had become
loose within its connection, no doubt due to the fact that it is fully
exposed to the elements.
I "repaired" the connection and things have been ok. I suggest that this
connection be inspected periodically, especially in areas with harsh winter
climates, as it can be a source of these types of problems.
