Master Brake Cylinder Question

I just cleaned up the master brake cylinder on a TD that has sat in storage
for 25 years. I put new rubber parts on and plan to use the new silicone
brake fluid. My question is, should the push rod have some kind of lubricant
on it, or does it fit into the piston dry? There seems to be some dried up
remnant of something on it, but I can't tell what. The shop manual says
nothing about this. Any advice will be appreciated.
