from the old Scott Fisher archives (circa 2/91):

        18V engines used a modified, and weaker, form of connecting rod
        with the bearing caps fitted perpendicular to the rod's long axis;
        18G series rods have the bearing cap fitted on the diagonal, and are
        much stronger.
