for a more accurate test than a compression test use a leak-down tester,
for those who dont know it is a guaged device that allows a metered amount of
air from your compressor( 70psi is good) into the each compression chamber
via the spark plug hole, done with a warmed up engine, the piston at TDC with
both valves closed. the ratio of air loss (in percent) gives overall
condition of the rings, valves etc. By removing the oil filler cap, radiator
cap, air filters, or an ear to the exhaust pipe the source of lost air leads
directly to the problems, ie: rings, head gasket, intake valves, exhaust
valves. This device is far superior to a compression tester in finding the
weak link, as a compression tester only tells you there is a problem, not
where. Cost is not to bad, I've seen them as low as $65.00 in Summit
catalog,( Tavia brand part no. tav0815)
Summit Racing Eqpt @ 216-630-0200
i dont work for summit, i bought mine from the Mac tool guy for a lot more
money though.
