That reminds me of my '76 Datsun B210. When the clutch burned up, I
used to shift gears in the same manner. Even downshifted without a clutch,
but you really had to "throw" it in gear.
The funny part was that I could crank it up while it was in first
gear to get it started. Worked fine for about a week until I got my
paycheck and could afford to have the clutch repaired.
