Re fuel pumps that cut out and respond to the ol' hammer tap:
As I understand it, what is happening under those circumstances is that the
diaphragm is sticking closed under constant force from the solenoid (i.e. the
breaker points aren't breaking). The first thing to try when you get a fuel
starvation symptom (while still rolling) is to flick the ignition key off and
on. If the problem is in the points, this will release the current long
enough for the solenoid to release (you're doing the same thing with the key
that the points were supposed to do). That may very well be enough to get the
pump clicking again, at least long enough for you to get to the next exit or
to a safe place to pull off the road (you may have to repeat the process).
