Yes, they are completely different.  Fortunately for us, the MGA _is_ sold
today, at market value, more or less.  Compare the prices yourself.  I
assume you meant if the MGA were _built_ today.  In that case it would be
built to meet safety/emissions/whatever requirements and as such would be
a completely different car.  When built, the A was very popular, even
though the purists said it wasn't a "real" MG.  Happens every time. 
However, the new MG is always the best car that can be built to a price
point.  MG always tried to offer an affordable sportscar.  Either they've
changed that or their idea of affordable has changed with the F.  You
could get a nice Jag E-type or Rolls or whatever for that (and you can get
it in the US, unlike the F).  I guess what I'm trying not to rant about 
is that it's good that people are not all the same.  One person buys an E 
for a certain sum and perhaps his neighbor buys a Toyota for the same 
amount.  Different car, different person, different feeling, nothing 
wrong with that.
