Elaine -
You didn't mention what year/model car you have, but I would suspect
the dimming rheostat. My original one had failed and was frozen up
also. I replaced it with a used unit. I opened up the old one and was
not impressed with the design. One of the things on my to-do list is to
design a solid state variable voltage regulator to replace the
rheostat. Someday....
