I'm sorry to have lost the thread for this posting but comment as follows
concerning the greasing the hub splines.

I understand that it is important to keep the grease clear of the bearing
surface between the wheel centre and the tapered neck on the hub.

This surface is, I understand, designed to be a friction bearing surface
and slippage at this face encouraged by grease can in fact chew out the
wheel centres.

Can anyone confirm this. For years (and years) while I had not
intentionally greased this surface I had never really bothered to clean it
of grease that had worked its way up when changing wheels until a friend
(with an E-type Jaguar) recently pointed out the error of my ways.

It made some sense to me at the time when he explained the physics of the
mating surfaces.

Right or wrong do you reckon?
