Steve:
You'll notice when you're looking at the Flag of Union that the St.
Patrick's cross (the red one) is slightly offset on the St. Andrew's
cross (the white one) in such a way that there's a wide strip and a
narrow strip of the white cross showing. (We're talking about the
diagonals, now). The flag should be set so that the wide strip in the
upper lefthand corner is uppermost. That's the right way up.
