The loose canvas above the rear window is supposed to be cemented to the
hinged portion of the top frame. However, if this has not been done,
you are well off!
1. When folding the beast per the previous instructions, you are able to
lay the fabric out flat on the rear deck, fold in the quarter windows,
fold up at the top of the rear window, close the latches, and lay the
folded fabric and window over the frame and down behind the seats
without any rolling, pinching, etc.
2. When erecting the monster, especially when cold and shrunk to one
quarter its normal size, mdo so with the hinged frame member above the
rear window folded flat against the piece it hinges to. Then, as the
absolute last step, fold it down into place.

The following instructions are from the 1974 MGB Owners Manual.
Lowering the hood
Unclip the sun visors and move them to one side.
Release both windscreen frame toggle catches.
Release the two fasteners on the windscreen rails, the two
fasteners on the cantrails (above and to the rear of the side
window) and the two fasteners on the hood mounting
brackets (the ones on the top frame just behind the side
windows).
Release the four fasteners from each rear quarter panel and pull
the hood slightly forward to disengage the hook from the socket
of the body side panel.
Move the seat tilt catch forward and incline the seat backs
toward the front of the car.
Raise the hood header rail until it is poised approximately
midway over the door aperture.
Disengage the hood rear rail from the anchor plates on the
tonneau panel.
Fold each quarter-light into the back-light and continue the fold
in the material forward to the header rail. ENSURE THAT
THE FOLD IS MADE IN THE HOOD MATERIAL BETWEEN THE QUARTER-LIGHT
AND THE BACK-LIGHT. FAILURE TO DO THIS MAY CAUSE
PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE BACK-LIGHT MATERIAL.
Push the header rail rearwards and at the same time draw the
back-light and hood material out over the luggage compartment lid
ensuring that the hood material does not become trapped between
the hood sticks.
Fully lower the hood. Fold the two windscreen frame toggle
catches rear- wards to prevent them damaging the back light.
Roll the back-light and material forward over the folded hood.
Position and secure the two retaining straps.
Replace the sun visors and return the seat back-rests to their
original positions.
Well there you have it. The factory instructions. I follow this basic
procedure except I add a couple of terry cloth towels which cover the
back and quarter-lights to further protect them from chaffing.
