In preparation for replacing the clutch in my 1967 MGB, I've been making a list
of all the little bits and pieces that I will need to replace while I have the
engine and transmission out. I've discovered that my car doesn't have an engine
restraint rod (stayrod) bolted between the transmission and the rear cross
member. The DPO replaced the original engine and transmission with a unit from
a 1979 B, but retained the original rear cross member. The early type of
stayrod will not bolt to the later transmission, and the later type will not
bolt onto the early cross member. Just how important is this device? The car
has survived for 15 years without one. Should I try to track down a cross
member and rod from a later MGB, or just not worry about it?
