Use mild steel wire .025 dia.with tri-mix gas.(Yes,yes, I know that's only supposed to be for stainless but it works like a dream on mild).Tack weld every 4 inches or so cooling with compressed air(best) or very wet cloth(good) as you go,then fill in with solid weld. Forget the air-chisel! Drill your spot welds out with a solid carbide purpose built thingy.Eisengefs (see Hemmings), sell the bees's knees and vicar's knickers in this department.
