My 60 MGA has a similar symptom and has had the same careful front end
rebuild.I recently diagnosed a small amount of play within the streering
rack itself. The resposes I got after posting this condition to the list
were a little discouraging as regards the ease of fixing so i am going to
live with it until next winters' doldrums. I would be curious if your car
has the same problem. To check, jack up front, grab each front whel and
rock them side-to-side. See if you have any play.On my car it was fairly
easy to see the play within the rack(left side only). This wont solve your
problem, but might narrow the cause. Let us know what you find! Good Luck
