Speaking of not-so-kosher things that some "paid" mechanics do -  I hate
it when they replace hoses or exhaust systems and throw out your
original clamps and use their modern new ones!  
Or replace your original parts with modern substitutes, rather than
rebuilding them (or even telling you they can be rebuilt).
 
A couple of experiences like that convinced me a long time ago that the
best mechanic for my LBC is me.  I may be learning as I go, but I know
I'll take good care of her (and I work for a lot less money)!!
