Hi Fellow Listers,

Somebody started a thread about sales slips et al.

That made me wonder about the following:
(Mainly) when I was still a student, I've been driving across the USA for
many weeks,
from East Coast to West Coast vice versa.
What I remember now is that in virtually all the cars I have driven then
(cars I got from
drive-away companies), there were a lot of bills pertaining to the car and
its maintenance.

Question: Is it a legal requirement in the USA that you can show proof of
ownership whenever
you drive a car? Is that the reason why the car's bill is 'always' in the
glove compartment?

Over here, in the various countries of Europe, the car's registration
document is normally
a satisfying document for the authorities. Plus, you need a driving license,
of course.

Just wondering
