Guys,
New nyloc nuts are ALWAYS required if you disassemble something that has
them installed. They CAN be reused, but they will not be vibration proof.
Having said the above, I don't think that wasting your time installing
nylocs plus thread sealer plus gorilla snot plus, plus, plus is the way to
go. After all, many earlier cars merely used locking washers and standard
nuts, or just jam-nuts; I can't remember the last time I saw a rear-end
come adrift, although I am sure that it has happened to someone somewhere.
When you install the new pads, simply draw the NEW nuts up evenly, while
watching the rubber pads closely. They will begin to bulge from the
clamping action of the U bolts. When they are well compressed, stop
tightening the nuts. Don't overdo it, you will cause the pads to
deteriorate quickly.
This isn't rocket science.......some of you worry too much.
BTW, If you want to REALLY lock something down, use aircraft-type
nuts...the ones that are all-steel with the oblong shaped top. They WON'T
come loose, but WILL wear the u-bolt threads if you remove them.
Best Regards,
Ray

PS I highly recommend the Springtime in the Smokies show in Townsend that
will be held, I understand, on May 2 this year. We wouldn't miss it. A
couple from England were staying at the hotel next to the show grounds a
couple of years ago, and commented that they thought that they were home
when they saw the cars! The Blount County sports car club are super
friendly, and I think that all of you will be amazed at the variety of cars
and the surrounding atmosphere. The price is VERY reasonable and the drive
through the Smokie Mountains afterward is beautiful. The nearest airport is
Knoxville, TN.
