The SU stops pumping when enough back pressure has built up from the 
carbs.  If it still runs when you plug the output then the inlet valve 
must be leaking.  There are two filters on the pump, trying cleaning 
them and flushing out the pump.  Continuous pumping would also be caused 
by a punctured diaphragm, but then I would expect to get petrol, or at 
least fumes, coming out of the vents in the boot.
