Joe Ratigan's theory is a good one ... the 'B', diaphragm
style, pressure plate should be fitted in conjunction
with the front tranny cover and release bearing arm from
a 'B' 3-synchro tranny ... they bolt right up and correct
the geometry for the thinner 'B' pressure plate.

I never tried it, but ya might be able to remove the
starter and take a peek (using a small mirror) to see if
ya have a 'B' pressure plate.

Its also possible that the PO was attempting to compensate
for wear ...  both the hole in the push rod, that accepts the
clevis pin, and the brass bush/bolt that the release bearing
arm pivots on are subject to wear.
