A direct drop-in replacement for R-12 air conditioning refrigerant is now
available for automotive use. No expensive and complicated retrofitting is
necessary for GHG R-406A, the R-12 substitute. Under the Clean Air Act,
R-406A has been available for automotive use since September 18, 1995. It
is under review by the EPA. According to the supplier, Monroe Air Tech,
Inc. (Bloomington, IN; 800-424-3836), GHG R-406A can be installed and
recovered with existing R-12 equipment. It is compatible with all R-12
systems.
The product is miscible in both mineral and alkl-benzene oil and works well
with existing hoses, valves and seals. GHG R40A reportedly causes 95
percent less ozone depletion than R-12.
