'61 MGA 1600 rebuild?

I've had my '61 MGA 1600 for a little over a year.  PO had it since '78
and I don't think he ever did much to the engine.

How should I determine if the engine needs a rebuild?  It burns oil on
start after having sat for a while.  It knocks and rattles on start-up.

If it needs to be rebuilt, I have little time (or ability), therefore
what would be the best way to get it accomplished in the Boston, MA
area.
