Last THursday I had the first real breakdown in over 10 years on my MGA
Coupe. Looked under the bonnet at the fuel filter and it was empty. So my
thoughts immediately went to the fuel pump. Gave it a rap and away we
go!

So last night I removed the pump and tore it down. The check valves
worked flawlessly and the points were in very good shape. BUT I found
all kinds of rust, about 1/2" deep, built up around the intake screen.
So I cleaned up the pump a little. Removed the rust from the fuel line.
between the tank and the pump. mPut it back together and away I go.
Everything just fine.

But in my investigation, I find that the pump looks like a Lucas but had
no removeable screen filter and had a "Hastings" name molded in the
plastic cover. Contact points were the same arrangement. Was this a
common aftermarket pump? Are the points and diaphram replacement parts
the same as Lucas? No need to change them now but just want to know in
the future.

What type of filter are people putting between the tank and pump? Where
are you placing it? Close to the tank or up near the pump where it is
pretty tight to get to?
