Hello John:

My first choice would be a 110V mig welder from HTP America. I believe it
is a model 140. We have one at work that we bought as a backup to our
industrial-type Miller. It is portable and has a 100% duty cycle at lower
power settings. The basic set up is about $700.00 US.

If the budget doesn't allow for the HTP, my next choice would be a Lincoln
mig welder. I think it is a model 100 or 110. Get the gas option. I have
used one of these in a welding class and it's a real sweetheart. I've seen
them priced from $400.00 to $475.00, again with the gas setup. The welder
alone is available for about $300.00 at farm supply and building centers.

IMHO most of the $300.00 and less mig welding rigs (especially the Sears)
are not worth toting home. Some of them have a constantly hot electrode
that hampers smooth usage by a clumsy oaf like myself.

OTOH I have had good results with Craftsman branded air compressors and
still use a 1HP rig I bought over 25 years ago. My new A/C is a 6HP
single-stage Craftsman and it suits me fine. YMMV.

Good luck,
