Hi John,
Are you sure the kingpin nut gets torqued? The kingpin has to rotate and there
shouldn't be excessive tightness or vertical play. My book says to shim as
necessary to achieve a maximum of .002" end play (vertical movement).  
That's what I did when I rebuilt my front end..........the cotter pin in the
castellated nut keeps everything fixed.
