The reason that one would want a dirrect drive fifth gear is mostly for racing
app. Nissan produced one fo the Zcar racer . It allowed for a wider range of
ratio so when road racing you would have an additional gear to sellect if
needed because of the type of turn or traffic at the turn to give proper rpm
when exiting the turn . This of course is all related to the opperating range
Of the eng depending on cam profile and other eng. design conditions.
