If the tach dies before the engine has stopped rotating then the problem is
in the LT side of the ignition or back through the white circuit, ignition
switch and brown circuit.

If the tach is still registering then the fault is in the HT circuit or is
fuel related, but fuel problems usually cause a fade rather than a sudden
switch off.
