While replacing the outer oil seal on the 71 BGT (tube-type) axle a question
came up. As the new seal presses into the outer bearing hub it seems to me
that it only seals that half and against the split collar that slides over
the splines. There are two other possible places for the gear oil to
escape. 1. Between the axle shaft and the split collar and 2. Between the
mating surfaces where the bearing cap bolts to the housing flange. I
applied a thin bead of RTV between the mating surfaces upon reassembling.
It was probably unnecessary but I didn't want to take the chance. Any
explanations?
