Neil, I'll try to answer thus...

Engine wear has been researched vastly for obvious reasons.  Results show
that the loss of metal along cylinder bore per hour remains the same whether
the engine is running fast or slow and the biggest single factor determining
bore wear is engine temperature.  Bearing loads at full throttle are less
than those at closed throttle at the same speed.  This is difficult to
accept because it seems to go against what we feel should happen.  This
subject is rather in depth and will take some time for me to elaborate (they
didn't offer typing with Mech. Eng.!).

I recall an article that was published in the South African Car magazine a
few years ago on this subject.  As Charley says, most trips are 2 miles or
less and of a stop-start nature.  This is when most wear occurs, since there
are varying throttle openings and varying temperatures.  The best conditions
are open road cruising and as has been correctly pointed out, cars that
travel high distances on freeways tend to have lower engine wear, regardless
of the actual speed traveled.  These are the best conditions for reduced
wear.

Driving patterns are more important than driving style.  Therefore, for
reduced engine wear, driving slowly in high gear with wide throttle opening
is out, revving into red is also out, freeway driving is ideal, stop-start
is not.  The longer the warm up period, the more wear, so allowing the car
to idle up to operating temperature is also not good.
