There is ALWAYS good news and bad news!

Bad: Last Tuesday (BEAUTIFUL DAY IN BIG D) took the MGB out for a run,
filled it with gas and as I "gently" accellerated from the station heard
a loud BANG followed by one dead cylinder and metal on metal banging
inside the engine every time she turned over. Thrown rod.

Good: Pulled the head this afternoon expecting to all kinds of sh*t
inside the engine requiring reboring, new pistons, etc. etc. but
(trumpets sound) the number four piston had broken into two parts just
above the wrist pin. The top half was at the top of the bore getting
hit every stroke and the bottom half was sliding smoothly up and down
the cylinder without hurting anything!!! All I need is one new piston!

Now the question: Can I get the oil pan off, and number four connecting
rod removed and replaced without pulling the engine? Or, is the easiest
way just put it first and then have room to work?

Thanks for all the help the list gives us all.

Busted piston, but big smile because cylinder wall is not ruined.
