Hi,
A while back a thread (more like a hawser) on this topic ran and ran.
I don't know if a definitive answer came up but this last weekend Click and
Clack (Tom and Ray Magliozzi (sp?) on NPR) gave one that really sounded good.
In the olden days of RUBBER battery casings the battery acid would seep through
the case and get on the floor. The floor would become a somewhat conductive
path draining the battery. Modern plastic cases are not at all porous and this
no longer happens. I'll know fairly soon because my battery has been on the
floor all winter.
