Any misfire condition can cause overheating of the converter. Either rich 
(extra unburned fuel, high CO ) or lean (lean misfire,high HC,poor 
combustion) can cause hydrocarbon emissions. Any misfire due to ignition 
problems can also cause this.Check for burned or too tightly adjusted exhaust 
valve(s) allowing mixture into the exhaust, or causing misfire. 
If you can see the converter glowing red at night - youve got trouble.
