You need to take a step-by-step approach, the easiest thing is to check the
ignition system first, including points gap and timing.  Then check the
valve clearances before moving on to the carbs, i.e. do the stuff you can
see and measure first.

Have a look at http://freespace.virgin.net/paul.hunt1/hammer.htm, select
'Electrics' and 'Won't Start'.  It may help with faulting the ignition.  An
intermittent coil (heats up, opens circuit, cools down, closes circuit)
could cause the symptoms you describe, and may be completely open circuit
now.
