Sounds like a worthwhile attempt, but I believe it's rebuild time old buddy.  
The situation would indicate that you're getting a lot of blow by on one or 
more cylinders, possibly from a broken/stuck ring or too.  I've seen one 
engine like this so far gone that it was blowing exhaust out through the 
timing cover seal!  But you're right. Before you pull it, try anything.  
Maybe you do have an oddity there.  Good luck!
