I think I've done it both ways on a '66, but I would suggest installing 
it later, on the principle that the more maneuvering room you have, the 
better. Not to mention less weight to hoist. And it's not difficult to 
install it in the car. I went through 4 starters in 6 months when I had a 
bad flywheel ring gear.
