I believe you are right here.
I had just this problem with the GT after resto - the only bit that wasn't
replaced. The problem went away with replacement of the unit. The fun bit is
trying to fix it back in - could do with a fibre optic camera on ones finger
tips.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the sign that your voltage regulator
has gone south.
