MGA speedometer

The speedometer needle on my MGA 1600 jumps all over the place while running 
& idling.  Is there anything I can do, short of sending the whole unit out 
for repair?  The manual mentions lubing the cable, is this difficult.  Do you 
think that this is the problem?  Thanks in advance.
