Bill,

I can answer the rank amateur part.  If it requires you to do the 
job again you will be able to do it faster.  Having re-done some
jobs they seem to go faster the next time.  The first time I took
my carb off it took forever, at least 1.5 hours.  Now I can get
it off and replace in about 10 mins.  See, your mother was 
right, practice makes perfect :-)
