No caliper travel HELP!

Hi listers, it was brake bleed day for and my wife and I. Problem is that
after all the bubbles were gone we got bad return on the pedal and no
caliper travel. I am un sure about the correct position of the bleed nipple
because the picture on the haynes does not match the drawing on the
opposite page.  Does the bleed nipple go paralell (sp?)to the hose or
perpendicular(pointing towards the wheel)? Oh! no leaking on the wheel at
